Research Involving Hazardous Agents

If your animal research involves the use of hazardous agents (e.g., radioisotopes, infectious agents, recombinant DNA, etc.), you must obtain approval of the Radiation Safety Officer or the Biosafety Officer before approval of your application can be issued.

Experimental Design & Justification for Requested Number of Animals

Many delays in the ARC review and approval process originate from inadequate answers to the Experimental Design and Justification Section of the Application to Use Animal Subjects in Research and/or Teaching. Therefore, the following information is provided in order to assist investigators in preparing a comprehensive yet concise description of the overall experimental design as required.

Approval Notification

Please note the submission deadlines posted on the ARC website. Submission deadlines are generally 17 days prior to Committee meeting dates. Following review, allow four weeks for receipt of correspondence regarding your application. Upon approval, the ARC will notify the principal investigator, the Office of Sponsored Research if extramural funding sources have been listed, and the appropriate vivarium supervisor.

Pre-Committee Review

For most new, renewal, and continuation applications, as well as amendments with significant changes (e.g., experimental procedures, number of animals, method of euthanasia, animal species and/or strain, pain category), a Pre-Committee Review of your application prior to submission to the ARC is required. This pre-review process is designed to address animal care issues and ensure completeness of your application prior to Committee review.
