We are pleased to announce the launch of new training program materials and a new training option for individuals working with mice and/or rats. The training program changes are the result of extensive collaboration between the Animal Research Committee (ARC), Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM), and ARC administrative staff, and should provide much-needed improvements to training accessibility and ultimately animal welfare.

Highlights of the new program include:

  1.  A new ARC Policy on Mouse and Rat User Training, which details responsibilities and procedures for new team members who will work with live mice and/or rats.
  2. The ability for mouse and rat species-specific (“hands-on”) training to be conducted by qualified laboratory personnel, rather than exclusively by DLAM; and
  3. Three new courses, available in Worksafe, that must be completed by new mouse and rat users:
    • DLAM Cage Side Communication Cards
    • Identifying and Reporting Sick and Injured Rodents
    • Rodent Euthanasia

Please review the ARC Training and Certification Program page for full details about the ARC’s Certification Program for animal users.

These changes for mouse and rat users will be effective July 25, 2025. Please contact the ARC if you have any questions or feedback.
